Egypt national team will be doing without goalkeeper Ahmed El Shenawy at the 2018 FIFA World Cup following an injury he sustained while playing for club side Zamalek on Sunday.
“El Shenawy underwent a medical examination which showed he will not be able to play the next World Cup because he suffers from an anterior cruciate ligament injury,” the Pharaohs medical staff chief Abu El Ela said in a statement.
The situation opens the way for veteran goalkeeper and second choice Essam El-Hadary, who could become the oldest player at the Russia 2018 at age 45.
El Shenawy, 26, abandoned the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations due to injury, with El-Hadary taking his placed as the Egyptians went on to claim silver at the tournament.
Egypt are pitted against hosts Russia, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in Group A of the upcoming Mundial.
