It’s been five days of exciting volleyball action at the volleyball court of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere in the zone 3 Africa volleyball clubs championship.

On day five of the tournament, host team, Legacy volleyball club of Lagos lost (0-3) in three straight sets to Ghana Police in the first men’s semi-final match as Ghana became the first team to progress to the finals of the competition.

The second semi-final match between Nigeria Customs and Nigeria Police was a tough contest which kept the spectators on the edge of their seats throughout the duration of the game; but it was Nigeria Customs who eventually prevailed 3-1 to set a final date with Ghana Police.

Speaking on the win, the Nigeria customs captain, Sunday Akapson said: “It’s very exciting. I know it came a long way but it’s very very exciting to win.”

The customs team have played a number of tough teams en route the finals and when asked if it feels like a good preparation for the finale, he said: “Yes it is a good preparation for the finals.

“This is because we’ve invested so much working hard at home and actually we are seeing the results of the hard work we did at home.”

For the finals he said: “It’s all about hardwork, hardwork, hardwork all through. Like I said earlier, we started at home dedicating and committing ourselves to it. Now we have gotten to the finals and we are going to make sure we put in everything because after tomorrow we can party.”

The female customs team are also in the finals and will be up against the female team of Ghana Police. What is the secret to such a successful outing by the Nigeria customs volleyball team?

“Our office has been very supportive and I must commend them for that. You can see our officials are around to support us physically, morally, financially and they are really gingering us to give our best,” the team captain said.

The men’s bronze medal match between Nigeria Police and Legacy will take place by 2pm, while the women’s final between Nigeria customs and Ghana Police comes up by 3pm.
