Super Eagles right back Tyronne Ebuehi has joined Portuguese top division side Benfica on a five-year deal. Ebuehi, 22, joined the former European Cup winners from Dutch Eredivisie side Ado Den Haag.
Den Haag was Ebuehi’s first professional team where he played until April this year, making twenty-eight league appearances in the 2017/18 season.
Born in the Netherlands to a Nigerian father and a Dutch mom, Ebuehi opted to play for Nigeria and earlier this week was named in Nigeria’s 30-man provisional squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia.
Ebuehi has played four times for Nigeria though yet to feature in a competitive game, meaning that he is still eligible to play for his country of birth, Netherlands.
The transfer means that Ebuehi, who turned down a transfer to English second division side Norwich City in January will feature in the UEFA Champions League next season after Benfica finished second in the Portuguese league.
“It is a feeling of great happiness to be able to be here in a club of this dimension. It’s a dream come true and a big step in my young career,” Ebuehi told Benfica’s website in Portuguese.
Ebuehi has been taken round Benfica’s prestigious stadium Estadio da Luz and will resume for pre-season after this summer’s World Cup.
