2018 Africa Youth Games: Team Nigeria place fifth

Team Nigeria finished fifth behind Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco at the end of the 2018 African Youth Games in Algiers.

The 3rd edition of the African Youth Games which ended this Saturday in Algeria with Team Nigeria producing some outstanding performances in a few events.

According to the medals table from the organisers of the games Nigeria had a total of 105 medals with 29 gold, 33 silver and 43 bronze medals.

Team Egypt finish top of the medals table with 199 medals snatching 101 gold, 55 silver and 43 bronze. In the 2014 African Youth Games, Egypt also came first with a total of 89 medals, 44 of which were gold.

Algeria finished on the second step of the podium thanks to a beautiful harvest of 226 medals, including 71 gold, 72 silver and 83 bronze just behind Egypt.

Tunisia occupied third position with 136 medals including 36 gold, 46 silver and 54 bronze; while Morocco overtook Nigeria to place fourth position with 106 medals including 29 gold, 37 silver and 40 bronze medals.

The African Youth Games was first held in 2010 and since then has occurred every four years, with the next one to be in Lesotho in 2022. It aims to imbue the Olympian spirit in African youth and promote African sports.

These games, in which some 3,000 athletes from 54 countries took part, provided an additional opportunity for African athletes to participate in the next Youth Olympic Games (YOG 2018).
