Members of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the 2018 Africa Wrestling Championship carried out a facility tour of the Alfred Diete Spiff Civic Centre, Port Harcourt on Thursday.
The facility tour was done to check the preparedness of the venue for the inaugural Governor Wike Wrestling Championship scheduled for November 23-30 and also the 2018 Africa Championship billed for February 7-11.
Recall that Rivers State Governor, Barr. Nyesom Wike on October 3 inaugurated a 13-man committee to ensure successful hosting of both tournaments.
Chairman of the LOC who doubles as the Rivers State commissioner for sports Hon. Boma Iyaye alongside President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Hon Daniel Igali led the facility tour with both giving their recommendations after the tour.
Iyaye said “The president and I came to inspect the facility on behalf of the LOC and we are very impressed with what we have here. The facilities are up to date what we need is to make some few touches to meet up with international standards.”
“We are very prepared, I wish the championship will take place tomorrow but unfortunately there is a time for it. We are working towards cementing all loop holes to make sure Rivers State host Africa and even the international world will be proud of Rivers state,” Iyaye declared.
In the same vein, President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Hon. Daniel Igali emphasised the readiness of Rivers State to host the championship next month.
“The facilities are adequate like the commissioner said we just need slight touches and we need to install sound which shouldn’t take us more than two weeks to do. So far I am impressed with what I have seen as I have said always we have what is needed to host at this Civic Centre.”
