…Cote d’Ivoire head coach Jean-Louis Gasset resigns…

Cote d’Ivoire head coach Jean-Louis Gasset has submitted his resignation letter to the country’s Prime Minister Robert Beugre Mambe, also in charge of sports, who has since accepted the Frenchman’s decision, www.aclsports.com reports.

There have been unwaning calls for the 70-year-old’s ousting in the wake of the Elephants’ 4-0 humiliation in Group A’s final matchday on Monday, but Gasset has now decided to throw in the towel, stressing it was a personal decision and not that he was under any pressure from the Ivorian FA or the Ministry of Sports.

In the meantime, Gasset’s first assistant, Emerse Fae, a former Côte d’Ivoire international, will take charge of the team, to be assisted by former Elephants goalkeeper, Alain Gouamene and Guy Demel, also a former Côte d’Ivoire player.

In a related development, the Ivorian Football Federation have announced that “the contract of Jean-Louis Gasset is terminated for insufficient results.” With both statements, it is clear that the French-born manager will not be in charge of the side if the Elephants progress into the next round of the 2023 AFCON.

Côte d’Ivoire, host nation of the 2023 AFCON, are on the verge of crashing out of the competition, with just three points on board from three games. Meanwhile, the Elephants currently sit third on the log of third-best-placed teams but could drop further depending on Wednesday’s results.
