Local media in Brazil reported the arrest of the President of the Brazilian Olympic Committee Carlos Nuzman, on Tuesday over allegations of International Olympic Committee, IOC vote-buying of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Nuzman, whose passport has been seized, is also under investigation over a claim that he secured Russian citizenship in exchange for his vote in 2007 to award the 2014 Winter Olympic games and main player in buying votes for Rio’s Olympic bid in 2009 in Copahagen.
The homes of Miami-based businessman Arthur Cesar de Menezes Soares Filho also known as ‘King Arthur’ and business partner Eliane Calvacante were also raided. But the latter was arrested at his resident in Laranjeiras, located in central Rio, while Soares was no where to be found.
The courts have been asked to freeze $320m in assets belonging to Nuzman, Soares, and Cavalcante
President of the International Olympic Committee, IOC, Thomas Bach might have spoken too soon about cleaning up corruption scandals in the organisation.
Bach had told FIFA Congress two years ago that the IOC had cleaned up the act of the Salt Lake City scandal in the late 1990s. How embarrassing does it get for the German?
Despite the alleged scandal rocking Brazil at the moment, the memories of Rio hosting its first ever Olympics will forever remain in their hearts.
