Rangers International midfielder Chiamaka Madu says qualification for the group stage of the 2019/20 CAF Confederation Cup (CAFCC) is enough motivation for his side ahead of Sunday’s clash with AS Pelican.
Rangers have a 1-2 deficit to overcome when they host the Gabonese side in a second leg first round clash in Africa’s second-tier club football competition at the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium, Enugu on Sunday.
Chiamaka Madu, one of the few surviving members of the Rangers side that won the league in 2016 says his side’s aim is to better what they did last season.
“I think we need to get to the group stage. We need to go a step better than what we
did last season,” says Chiamaka.
“That is enough motivation for the entire team coupled with the management and government to answer to any of our needs towards achieving our targets in both domestic and continental engagements this season.”
Rangers, coached by Benedict ‘Surugede’ Ugwu went 2-0 down in the first half an hour of the first leg clash with Pelicans in Libreville a fortnight ago but a classy goal by new signing Nnamdi Egbujor gave them the much valued away goal.
“It is a must win game for us if we must qualify for the next round of the competition,” continued Chiamaka Madu.
“The expectations of our fans all over the world is to get a win against Pelican which I am sure we are prepared to get due to the high intensity training by our coaches. By the special grace of God, we shall earn our win on Sunday in Enugu.”
A win on aggregate for Rangers at the end of Sunday’s match will give them a spot in the playoff round of the Confederation Cup, the penultimate stage to the money spinning group stage.
