Ivory Coast international Christian Kouame is currently making the headlines in Italian Serie A where he represents Genoa, the club he joined last year from Serie B side Cittadella.
His successful campaign last term, during which he scored 4 goals and provided 5 assists, has placed him in the spotlight in Italy, with top teams like Juventus and Napoli monitoring his situation, according to his agent.
“The pressure is swelling. I can feel it, but it’s also an opportunity to launch my career and improve. I am told lots of people are watching me but I don’t want to think of all that too much to avoid mistakes,” the 21-year-old striker told www.ACLSports.com, days after honouring his first call-up to the Elephants.
“When you get an invitation to your national team it’s a sign that you need to buckle up to start your career properly. You now have two responsibilities: towards your club and your country. It’s another level.”
French clubs Marseille, Lille and Lyon have supervised Kouame, whose market value is currently pegged at €40 million.
With 3 goals in 7 matches so far this season, Christian Kouame shares the Capocannoniere table with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku, who also have 3 each.
“I want to really work hard to improve my performance and hopefully become an African legend someday. Scoring goals and grabbing assists are not enough. You need to be influential and reliable,” he said.
Ivory Coast defeated DR Congo 3-1 in an international friendly on Sunday.
