SL Benfica new signing, Tyronne Ebuehi, is set for a long layoff after suffering a serious injury, according to his club. Ebuehi has damaged his ligaments and will go under the knife in few days, Portuguese giants, Benfica, revealed on Monday night.
“Tyronne [Ebuehi] suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee and will undergo surgical intervention in the next few days,” the club said in a statement on their official website.
The Nigerian defender played his first game for Benfica last week, coming on as a second half substitute in their preseason friendly against fellow Portuguese club, Victoria Setubal.
He also came on as a second half substitute in the club’s 1-1 draw against Italian champions, Juventus, at the ongoing International Champions Cup in the United States.
The 22-year-old joined Benfica on a free transfer from Dutch side, ADO Den Haag, putting pen to paper on a five-year deal with the club before jetting out to Russia with the Super Eagles.
This injury comes as a set back for the fullback, who was looking forward to his new adventure with the Portuguese outfit, including featuring for them in the UEFA’s elite club competition, the Champions League.
Ebuehi won his first competitive cap for Nigeria when he came off the bench in the 2-0 win over Iceland in Russia.
