It was a good weekend for Alex Iwobi in England as the Premier League took a short break for some action in the Emirates FA Cup.
The playmaker’s impressive displays this season for Arsenal continued as he led the Gunners to FA Cup success. Unai Emery’s side was too hot for championship team, Blackpool, to handle following a 3-0 victory with Iwobi scoring the their goal.
It was also FA Cup success for Leon Balogun, who went, saw and conquered Bournemouth at the Vitality stadium. Balogun was on from start to finish of their 1-3 win to book a place in the fourth round.
Another Super Eagles star who enjoyed victory was Isaac Success, who played for 71 minutes as Watford saw off Woking 2-0. The forward picked up a yellow card in that encounter.
Still in England, Stoke City will have to replay their third round clash following a 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury Town. Oghenekaro Etebo featured from start to finis in that game.
Meanwhile, it was a weekend to forget for the trio of Semi Ajayi, Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi.
Ajayi netted an own goal as Rotherham United suffered a humiliating 7-0 demolition at the Etihad against Manchester City, while the duo of Iheanacho and Ndidi of Leicester City were shocked 2-1 by Newport County.
Ajayi and Iheanacho played for 90minutes, with Ndidi rested by the Foxes.
Elsewhere in Europe, the Spanish first and second Divisions returned with bad news for some of our contingents there.
Kenneth Omeruo played his 11th game of the season for Leganes but was helpless as they lost 1-0 at Espanyol on Friday.
For the duo of Samuel Chukwueze and Moses Simon, it was a weekend of stalemates for their respective teams.
Chukwueze’s Villarreal were held to a goalless draw at Eibar with the youngster good again. Simon’s Levante were held to a 2-2 draw by Girona.
However, of the two, just Chukwueze tasted action, playing the duration of their game while Simon was not even listed.
In the Segunda division, Francis Uzoho failed to keep a clean sheet as Elche fell 2-1 at Tenerife.
In France, it was also a weekend for cup football with Samuel Kalu and Bordeaux were booted out by La Havre. Kalu played over an hour.
