The maiden edition of Folmus Wheelchair Basketball 3×3 Competition is expected to tip off on 18th September at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.
The organiser of the championship, Foluke Shittu told www.aclsports.com that the tournament is aimed at engaging wheelchair basketball players with more playing time.
The 2023 African Para Games bronze medallist said most players in the country end up not playing any competition in a year which later affects the performances of elite players.
The France-based player said, “I am organising this competition as my own way of supporting my co-athlete. This year, Nigeria-based wheelchair basketball players have attended just one National Championship initiated by the President, Seyi Johnson. Not many of the players made it to Abeokuta due to logistics.
“Six teams of elite players will participate in the Folmus Wheelchair Basketball 3×3 competition. Since Nigeria could not attend the Para Games, this will serve as a reunion for some of the players,” she told www.aclsports.com.
“On Tuesday (September 19th), Wheelchair Tennis will have its own session and winners will also emerge. We have players who could not make it to the African Para Games in Ghana; every one of us will participate in the competition”, she added.
Shittu assured lovers of wheelchair basketball that the Folmus Wheelchair Basketball competition will be organised yearly adding that plans are underway to make it a National Championship in the future.
She commended the leadership of the Wheelchair Basketball Federation of Nigeria led by Seyi Johnson for giving the sport a facelift since its assumption into office.
