Defending Champions, Great Calvary School whitewashed Marvel DMD Comprehensive School 11-0 to begin their title defence of the FRCN (Radio Nigeria) Kids Cup on an impressive note.

in the opening group A game moments after the opening ceremony which took place at the football pitch of Treasure 98.5 FM, Mgbuoba, the youngsters from Great Calvary left no one in doubt as to their intentions to retain the title.m with the goalfest.

Top scorer in the game, Kelvin Eugene who scored 4 goals said he was excited at the victory.

“I feel good because my coach taught me how to play football, I feel great. It was easy because let me say their leg was not too strong but I believe if we meet the next team that is strong we can play better than that” Kelvin said.

Daniel Jode, Harmony Ukpabi, Victor Onuoha, Kolapo Algerede and Ifeanyi all scored a goal each for Great Calvary.

In the second group A game, Highcast school defeated Springvalley 4-2 while Cedar Mount defeated Redeemers Int’l Sch 8-0 in a group B game.

Coach of Cedar Mount, Okolosi Akpojaro, said his boys played to instruction and expressed joy over the victory.

“I am very happy today for the success we have recorded so far, we actually prepared and I believe that we are going to come out as one of the best in this competition.”

Earlier in his opening remark, Zonal Director FRCN South South, Dr. Jonas Emechebe expressed happiness over the commencement of the second edition and pray God for safety of the players and officials throughout the period.

“My prayer is that God will guide us through out this tournament, there will be no injury, there will be no minor or tiny accident in as much as we have put in place with our partners standing by for any medical attention, God will give us the capacity to bring this competition that is starting today to a logical conclusion”

Director General of FRCN, Dr. Mansur Liman, represented by Director, Finance and Accounts, Headquarters, Pastor Michael Oluwole said that Radio Nigeria would continue to support the football competition to discover young talent.

“He said that we should assure you that this competition will be supported and will continue to be supported by Federal Radio Coporation of Nigeria. God also is in support of this he made it known to us in the holy book that bodily exercise profited little.

Chairman of the occasion and Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Mr. Solomon Eke, reassured Radio Nigeria of his continued support to the initiative.

“As a local government I promised you last time that I’m going to partner with you, and so my presence here shows that Obio Akpor Local Government is here with you and we will continue to partner you. He said.

Rivers state commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr.Paulinus Nsirim, represented by a Director in the Ministry, Mr. Dan Oruwari, said the football competition is a great initiative to engage the school children.

A total of 25 goals were scored on the opening day of the three weeks competition that will end on Friday, February 7, 2020.
