Former African champions Enyimba FC of Nigeria are looking at a number of Ghanaian top goalkeepers as they seek to replace first choice Theophilus Afelokhai who left the team last month.
Afelokhai was Enyimba’s first choice goalkeeper last season but the former Kano Pillars captain left the People’s Elephant to join oil-rich Rivers United last month, leaving Enyimba in search of a replacement.
Although the Aba giants have brought in Nigeria-born John Noble from ASC Kara of Togo, www.aclsports.com understands that the Enyimba hierarchy want better competition for Olufemi Kayode and Stanley Nwabali in the goalkeeping department.
First to be auditioned for Enyimba is former Adauna Stars goalkeeper Stephen Adams who terminated his contract with Great Olympics in January but is keen on a move to Nigeria.
The 30-year old was Black Stars’ goalkeeper at the 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN) where they beat Nigeria in the semi final but ACLSports learns that Enyimba might be put off by his lack of action in the past 12-18 points.
Another goalkeeper that is interesting the Blues is current Black Stars’ second choice goalkeeper Razak Abalora who is out of contract at top Tanzanian side Azam FC.
Abalora, 23, was the first choice at the East African side before the Covid-19 break and his contract has expired on June 30. He is also said to favour a move to Enyimba over a renewed deal at Azam.
Similarly, Enyimba have also been looking at Black Stars B goalkeeper Eric Ofori-Antwi who currently plays for Medeama SC. The 25-year old is highly rated in Ghana and there have been reports in the Ghanaian press that Enyimba have written to ask about his availability.
The goalkeeper is said to be interesting a number of foreign clubs but it remains to be seen if Enyimba will pay the $50,000 price tag on the goalkeeper who won bronze at the 2013 FIFA U20 World Cup in Turkey.
Enyimba have a good relationship with Ghanaian players as they currently have three; Daniel Darkwah, Emmanuel Ampiah and Farouk Mohammed in their fold. They also had a Ghanaian goalkeeper Fatau Dauda with them for three seasons till the end of the 2018/19 season.
