A board member of Borno state handball association, Hussaini Mohammed says plans are underway to revive former female handball giants, Topline Sparrows of Maiduguri.
Mohammed told www.aclsports.com that his team is planning to select female players from the internally displaced person (IDP) camps, train them and possibly sponsor their education.
The former Borno Spiders player revealed the Governor of Borno state, Alhaji Kashim Shettima remains their strong pillar.
Mohammed who played professional handball for Al Ittihad of Saudi Arabia and Al Ahli Sports club of Oman said an intra state competition will be held in the first quarter of 2019.
“I have been working with a private body for sponsorship of a secondary school male and female handball competition. I will personally donate the trophies for the event. We are also planning to pick players from the IDP camps and train them in handball and possibly sponsor their education”, the former Niger United player said.
The ex international further said, “The last time Topline Sparrows of Maiduguri participated in any national competition was in 2015, making its last international appearance at the continental level in 2012. I am happy to announce that the female handball team of Borno state will feature at this year’s National Sports Festival in Abuja”.
