Lagos State is set for the 2024 National Para Powerlifting Trials, www.aclsports.com reports. The 2024 National Para Powerlifting Trials will take place at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, from January 27th to 31st, 2025.

In a statement obtained by www.aclsports.com,  Abdullahi Libata, Secretary General of the Nigeria Para Powerlifting Federation emphasized the importance of the event for the future of the sport.

Libata said, “These trials are a crucial step in selecting athletes for the national team across all weight classes. The Federation does not want to wait for two to three weeks before international tournaments before organising trials. As the Boys Scout motto says, we want to be prepared. The only time we can replace players are when there are injuries, emergency or recommendations from the medical team

“We are not only looking to secure a strong squad for international competitions but also to identify the next generation of athletes who will take over from the aging members of the current team.”

Libata further highlighted the role of the trials in strengthening the sport at the grassroots level.

“This is an opportunity for us to scout new talents and ensure that we continue to build a robust and competitive team that will represent Nigeria with pride on the global stage. Most of our lifters have broken World Records, Commonwealth Games Records as well as Olympic Games records. They will serve as mentors for younger lifters in the country.

“In advanced countries, the replacement of the elite athletes always follow them to international championships but due to paucity of funds, the Federation cannot embark on such a project. The Federation is looking inward on ways to set the ball rolling for future champion,” he added.
