Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has heaped high praises on current Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr, insisting that the German has brought something he had never seen to the Super Eagles.
Mikel, 31, is bracing up for his second World Cup appearance for Nigeria after the 2014 edition in Brazil. He is currently the team captain and he led them to a Media parley at the team’s current camp base in Uyo, southern Nigeria.
At the parley, Mikel, who now plays for Chinese side Tianjin Teda was asked by ACLSports Chief Football Writer, Fisayo Dairo on his appraisal of the current setup and he answered quite frankly.
“Personally to me, I think one thing that has happened to this team is definitely the coach,” began Mikel.
“I think the discipline he’s brought to the team, the man-management that he’s brought into this team, the attention to details that we’ve paid to every game.
“No disrespect to other coaches that have worked with the team but I’ve never seen that before in the national team. Every game that we go into, we pay attention to every little detail.” he added.
Nigeria’s current squad is rated as one of the youngest among the thirty-two teams heading to Russia. Mikel also acknowledges the youthfulness of his teammates and believes they can do well in Russia.
“This team is a very young team, a very energetic team. We have a lot of young players and we are ready to play, we are ready to give everything.
“We have to make sure we play together as a team which is the most important thing. No individuality among the players, we have to make sure the team and Nigeria comes first and hopefully the sky will be our limit in Russia,” he added.
Nigeria’s squad will leave Uyo for Port Harcourt on Saturday ahead of their friendly against Congo DR in the Garden City on Monday.
