Nigeria finished second position with a total of 121 medals consisting of 47 gold, 34 silver, and 40 bronze medals across 25 sports at the just concluded 13th African Games in Ghana.
A total number of 19 sports won medals for Nigeria and topping the list is weightlifting with 16 gold, 10 silver and 6 bronze medals followed by athletics claiming 11 gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze medals.
Nigeria recorded a total number of 10 medals in the boxing event comprising 8 gold and 2 silver medals followed closely by wrestling with 6 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals. Making its debut at the African Games, Arm Wrestling won 4 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals.
Badminton won 1 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals while Taekwondo got 1 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze medals. Table Tennis without a gold medal won 3 silver and 3 bronze medals. Cycling, Hockey and Tennis won 1 silver and 1 bronze medals each while Basketball and football won 1 silver medal.
Chess won 2 bronze medals while Beach volleyball, Cricket, Handball, Judo and Swimming won 1 bronze medal each.
While conveying the message of Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, the Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh congratulated the athletes for making the nation proud, described their performance as commendable.
Egypt were crowned champions boasting of 100 gold, 44 silver, and 42 bronze; totalling 186 medals while South Africa are in third place with 32 gold, 32 silver, and 41 bronze. Algeria, Tunisia, hosts Ghana, Morocco, Mauritius, Ethiopia, and Kenya complete the Top 10 position.
Out of the 54 countries that registered for the event in Ghana, 53 were in attendance, with only Cape Verde absent from the 13th edition of the Games.
The next edition of the African Games is scheduled to take place in Cairo, Egypt, in 2027.
