Nigeria wins bronze at the Africa U18 Women’s Handball Championship in Tunisia after defeating Angola 28 to 24 goals.
The Nigerian players came into the match with full force dominating the first half by 12 to 7 points.
The Angolans, who were one of the favourites to win the competition, came back smoking in the second half but Coach Agboola Shittu’s tutored team held strong to win the match 28-24 and get the bronze medal as well taking a major scalp of a big team in Africa Women handball.
Shittu told www.aclsports.com that his target and expectations have been met by the players.
He commended the relentless spirit of the team in ensuring Nigeria does not return home empty-handed.
He said, “I am happy Nigeria was able to qualify for the 2024 IHF World Championship in China plus winning a bronze medal. The girls have written their names in the history books as the first Nigerian team to qualify for the World Championship since it began in 2006.
“The girls have shown to me that they deserve to be on the squad; they played to instructions of the coaches and I am proud of them”.
Meanwhile, in the final match, defending champion, Egypt retained their title as they comfortably defeated surprise finalist, Guinea 29-16 to be crowned champion of the 2023 Africa Women’s Youth Handball Championship.
