Head coach of Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side Akwa United, Sam John Obuh has told fans of his side that there is no need for them to panic yet after their winless start to the season.

Obuh’s side were left looking for their first win of the new season after three games following a 1-3 reversal at champions Enyimba on Sunday which left them with two points from three matches.

Akwa United will host Katsina United in a Match Day 4 game on Wednesday at the Nest of Champions in Uyo and Obuh’s message is clear.

“It is unfortunate that at the moment we have a paltry two points from a possible nine, but we are not distracted in any way because we know we still have 35 matches to play before the end of the season,” began Obuh to the club’s website on Tuesday.

“As far as this season is concerned, I have only one thing in my mind: I want to have a good season with Akwa United and help the team win trophies.

“We have made lots of mistakes in our first three matches, I’m happy that we have spotted them out early and we will correct those mistakes in subsequent matches starting with the game against Katsina United on Wednesday.

“League football is a marathon so there is no need to panic because we still have enough time to get back into the mix and announce our intentions as far as the race for the NPFL title is concerned,” added the former national Under-17 and Under 20 coach.

In a related development, Nigeria U23 star Ndifreke Effiong has joined the team after his participation at the 2019 U23 Africa Cup of Nations (U23AFCON) in Egypt.

Effiong started all matches for the Nigerian side which fell short of qualification from their Group B and had an assist in the 3-1 win over Zambia in their second group game.

Ndifreke Udo Effiong, a versatile player scored seven league goals for Akwa United last term and has been named in the team’s match day squad for Wednesday’s game against Katsina United.
