Akwa United head coach Kennedy Boboye has told www.aclsports.com that his side will not underrate their next two opponents in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) as they near a first-ever league title.
United are three points clear at the summit of Nigeria’s elite division with five games left in the 2020/2021 season and consolidated their leadership spot with a deserved point away to Rivers United, one of the league challengers on Sunday.
Akwa United’s next two league games will be at home to relegation strugglers Warri Wolves and Jigawa Golden Stars, a very tricky set of games.
Boboye says they will not underrate their opponents.
“We won’t underrate them and it’s a must win for us if we know we want to win the league,” began Boboye to www.aclsports.com
“If we had won the game against Rivers United and a few others, we would have been done and dusted by now but since we’re still dragging it, we don’t have any choice than to win those games,” he added.
Akwa United have lost just four of their thirty-three league games this season and currently on a sequence of four games unbeaten.
Boboye who is one of the few persons to have won the Nigerian league as a player and a coach says his wards are fully aware of the importance of the games.
“They know (the importance). It’s something we’ve discussed about. The three teams we’re going to play against: Warri Wolves, Jigawa and Ifeanyiubah are going to be the toughest teams we are going to play this season,” he affirmed.
Akwa United won the Nigerian Cup in 2015 and 2017 and have since been looking for their first ever league title. They currently stay top after Match Day 33 with 61 points, three ahead of nearest challengers Nasarawa United and Kano Pillars.
