Nigeria Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen and Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala were both named in the 2023 Ballon d’Or nomination list by France Football and L’Equipe released on Wednesday, www.aclsports.com reports.

Osimhen, who scored 31 goals in all competitions, helped Napoli win their first Serie A title in 30 years, while Oshoala was victorious with Barcelona Femeni as they won the Women’s Champions League, Spanish League as well as the Spanish Supercopa.

The Super Eagles striker becomes the first Nigerian to be nominated for the prestigious prize since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999.

The men’s category list featured firm favourites like 2022 World Cup winner Argentina and 7-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi, free-scoring PSG striker Kylian Mbappé and treble-winning Manchester City’s free-scoring Erling Haaland.

Earlier, Osimhen’s compatriot Oshoala was listed among the nominees for the women’s category of the award. The former Robo Queens striker made history last year when she became the first African to make the list. Besides the historic treble, Oshola 21 goals in the domestic league to emerge as joint-top scorer in Spain.  She also helped the Super Falcons reach the second round at the recently concluded Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
