As part of activities to mark the 20 years remembrance of renowned magician, Professor Moshood Abiola Peller, children of the late Icon have organised a unified sporting event tagged Peller Unity Cup in the home town of late Abiola Peller to immortalize him. This competition in conjunction with the Oyo state Ministry of Youths and Sports and the Oyo state Football Federation is aimed at discovering talents, empowering youths and promoting unity, while fostering development in the hometown axis of the late magician, Oke-Ogun region and Oyo state at large.
The event which started on Tuesday 18th July 2017 at the NYSC Orientation camp Iseyin, Oyo state is expected to end 3rdAugust, 2017. The tournament is currently being played across 10 local government axis of Oke-Ogun. The local governments are: Iseyin Local Government, Kajola Local Government, Itesiwaju Local Government, Iwajowa Local Government, Atisbo Local Government, Saki-West Local Government, Saki- East Local Government, Oorelope Local Government, Irepo Local Government and Olorunsogo Local Government.
Speaking earlier at the Press conference held at the House of Chiefs, secretariat, Ibadan to launch the event, the sponsor of the competition Chief AbiolaPeller of Acquila group said about 300 players will compete for the trophy, with 2 teams from each local government and a total of 20 teams for the tournament. He also explained that his motive is to make the competition an annual competition.
“My motive is to make it a yearly event, I have been doing Cooperate Social Responsibilities in Lagos where I have my businesses. Now I am using it as an opportunity to honour my late father and to develop our community. At the end of the competition, I wish to achieve the main objective of promoting unity amongst the diverse communities in the region,” he disclosed.
Chief ShinaPeller also said that he chose football because of his passion for football, he however said he is looking to expand to other sports, from subsequent editions.
“This is the maiden edition of the Moshood Abiola Peller football Unity Cup among our youths in Oke-Ogun area, my passion is for football and that is why we choose football ahead of other sports but in the second edition we are looking at other sports like golf, athletics, tennis among others,” he said.
Also present at the launch of the competition was the Oyo state Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr Abayomi Oke who lauded Chief Peller’s vision to give back to the community, stating that he was merely following the footsteps of his late father, Chief Moshood Abiola Peller.
“Sports is no longer business of government alone but we need individuals to promote the game of sports. What Peller is doing today will go a long way in the minds of our youths because they are being engaged positively with this tournament.We hope we can raise a football team from the participants at the end of the day as we are ready to support them from now till the end,” he enthused.
Winner of the maiden Peller Unity Cup will go home with 500,000 naira, Ist runner up will get, 300,000 naira and the second runner up will get 150,000 naira. Most Valuable Player will get 50,000 naira and there will be 50,000 naira for the Golden Boot Winner.
