English Premier League side, Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the appointment of Jose Mourinho as their new manager.
Mourinho has put pen to paper on a four-year contract that will see him stay at the club until the summer of 2023.
“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Jose Mourinho as Head Coach, ” Tottenham said in an official statement on Wednesday morning.
Mourinho’s appointment comes after former manager, Mauricio Pochettino was relieved of his duties at the club following a dismal start to the season.
Spurs have won just five matches in all competitions and are languishing in 14th position in the Premier League table.
With his appointment, former Porto, Chelsea and Manchester United boss, Mourinho, is expected to re-energise and inject new belief at the club, according to the club Chairman, Daniel Levy.
“In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football, ” he said. “He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician.”
“He has won honours at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.”
Mourinho has been without a job since he was sacked on December, 2018, and is excited to be back in the dugout and can’t wait to compete again in the Premier League with the ‘quality’ of players at Spurs.
“I am excited to be joining a Club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters, ” the legendary Portuguese said.
“The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me.”
Mourinho’s first match with Tottenham will see him travel to the London Stadium to take on fellow strugglers, West Ham United in the Premier League in an early kickoff on Saturday.
