Kaizer Chiefs Nigerian goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi is inching closer to a new deal at the Soweto club following a series of strong performances in the past few weeks.
Akpeyi, Nigeria’s first choice at the 2019 AFCON, with a little over six months before the expiration of his current deal, https://aclsports.com can report that Amakhosi are keen to offer the experienced player another contract extension.
The 35-year-old, who signed an extension back in January 2020 until June 2022, is expected to sign another deal after his impressive performances in an Amakhosi shirt. Akpeyi joined Chiefs from Chippa United in January 2019 as a short-term solution to cover for the injured Itumeleng Khune, but the Super Eagles shot-stopper has gone on to become a key figure at the club.
Talks are expected to hold in the next few days with the player’s representatives in order to finalize the terms for the new deal, a source close to the player told #YourSportsMemo
Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters believes the possible contract extension for the Super Eagles keeper is a good move by the club.
“With regards to the maturity that he (Akpeyi) has shown, I think he has warranted it (a new deal) and I think he deserves an extension. Obviously, a lot of people will say he is over the age limit and will soon be over the age of 35 and ask if that should be a concern. I mean, even if I look at myself, you know your physique well and you look after your body well and you know when you can play up to close to 40. I think he is good enough for that,” Walters told https://www.soccerladuma.co.za/.
Akpeyi has made 61 appearances for Chiefs, keeping 24 clean sheets in the process, and he is set to be in goal for the Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates on Saturday.
