Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt have successfully defended their Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership title after defeating Sunshine Queens 4-0 in their final game of the 2021 NWFL Premiership Super 6 in Ijebu-Ode on Sunday.

In attendance at the final game of the NWFL Premiership Super 6 was the Minister of Youth and Sports Development; Sunday Dare, and Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President; Amaju Melvin, amongst others.

Rivers Angels began the tournament poorly with two points from two games but turned it around on matchday 3 with a win and never looked back since then. They went into the final game of the tournament knowing a win was all they needed to emerge Champions and win they did in spectator fashion.

First-half goals from Oghenebrume Ikehua and Vivian Ikechukwu gave them breathing space as nerves were calmed in what was a crucial match in deciding Nigeria’s representative at the maiden edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League later this year.

Two more goals in the second half by Alice Ogebe and Maryann Ezeanagu ensured that Rivers Angels defeated Sunshine Queen in comprehensive manner thereby retaining the league title they won in Lagos in 2019 in Lagos as the 2020 league was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic last year.

In second place was Delta Queens who recorded a 1-1 draw with Lagos-based FC Robo who followed in third place on the table. Meanwhile Sunshine Queens, Bayelsa Queens, and Edo Queens finished fourth, fifth, and sixth position respectively.
