The Teranga Lionesses of Senegal were knocked out of the 2023 FIFAWWC playoff by Haiti in the early hours of Saturday morning in Auckland, New Zealand.
The Teranga Lionesses lost out of the FIFAWWC playoff following a 4-0 drubbing by Haiti as their hopes of qualifying for a maiden appearance at tournament came to an abrupt and disappointing end.
Senegal had their moments to take the lead early in the game but couldn’t capitalise. Eventually, Haiti took control of the tie and found the back of the net on the stroke of half time courtesy of an in-swinging corner from Sherly Jeudy headed beyond the goalkeeper by Kethna Louis.
Despite the break, the Teranga Lionesses failed to find their footing and recover from the first half stoppage time heartbreak as Haiti consolidated on their position 10 minutes into the restart. The Carribean team further doubled their lead through Nerelia Mondesir courtesy of another brilliant cross, this time, from the mercurial Melchie Dumornay, who recently signed for reigning European champions, Lyon.
About 10 minutes later following the goal, Roselord Borgella scored twice in two minutes to complete the rout with Haiti progressing to the final round of playoff, as they remain in contention to seal one of the three available spots for this year’s FIFAWWC finals taking place in New Zealand and Australia.
Haiti’s hope of a debut Women’s World Cup appearance rests on them defeating Chile, as both sides do battle on Wednesday, 22nd of February, 2022 for a place in the Women’s World Cup finals.
Senegal were knocked out of the FIFAWWC playoff despite coming into the tournament on the back of a historic 2022 Total Energies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal playoff win will have to wait for another four years to make their debut FIFAWWC appearance.
Despite missing a golden chance to appear at the global showpiece, the Teranga Lionesses still have a dead rubber international friendly on Tuesday with Group B loser, Thailand to play before returning home.
