Ivory Coast captain Serge Aurier could abandon the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations following ‘a serious injury’ he sustained against Morocco on Friday in Group D, according to the player himself and the Ivorian FA.
The Tottenham wing-back picked up a knock in the knee during a collision with a player of the Atlas Lions in second half and was substituted, as the Elephants went on to lose the encounter 1-0.
“For me I think it’s all over. It’s perhaps a tear or dislocation. We will take some tests to see,” Aurier said upon arriving at their hotel.
In a brief statement on Saturday, the Ivory Coast FA said that the chances of Aurier returning for the tournament are slim due to a ‘serious injury’.
The Elephants won their first match against South Africa 1-0 but the defeat against Morocco means their last group match against Namibia becomes crucial if they must progress to the next round.
