Nigerian midfielder Joel Chukwuma Obi says he is glad to have joined Italian Serie A side Chievo Verona. The 27-year old midfielder on Saturday signed a three-year contract with Chievo after three years in Turin, playing for Torino.
Obi was in Nigeria’s squad to the last FIFA World Cup Russia tournament although he failed to make any appearance at the mundial.
“I am very happy to have joined Chievo, a very ambitious club,” said Obi to the club’s official website.
“From the time I spoke with the manager, I was impressed by the project and I hope to be part of the success,” he added.
Obi who can play as left midfielder or left wing back was in the stands on Sunday as his new teammates defeated Pescara 1-0 in a Coppa Italia fixture at the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi in Verona. He is expected to feature in his side’s league opener next weekend.
In a related development, Super Eagles full back Ola Aina has moved closer to his much reported move to Italy after reports in the Italian press on Sunday linked him to a deal to Obi’s former club Torino.
It was reported that Aina’s England club, Chelsea have agreed the deal to send the defender who can play either as right or left back on a season-long loan deal to Torino with an option of a permanent deal. The loan deal is expected to go through early in the new week.
