Former Chairman of Nigeria’s League Management Company (LMC) Shehu Dikko has been named as Chairman of the newly constituted National Sports Commission (NSC), a role equivalent of the Minister of Sports, www.aclsports.com reports.
President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his Executive Committee made changes to the Federal cabinet on Wednesday during which the Ministry of Sports Development was scrapped to give way for the National Sports Commission (NSC).
Tinubu thus named Dikko as Chairman of the new composition which will oversee everything Sports in Nigeria devoid of undue government interference and distractions. The erstwhile Minister for Sports John Owan Enoh was redeployed to the Trade and Investment Ministry.
Dikko was the helmsman of the league body between 2016 and 2022 before another body emerged and he was consequently replaced before the 2022/2023 season by former parliamentarian Gbenga Elegbeleye.
Interestingly though, Dikko was the Vice Chairman of the LMC around the time Elegbeleye was Director Geneal of the National Sports Commission in 2013 (under the supervision of the Sports Ministry). Eleven years later, Dikko now heads the NSC with the Ministry scrapped while Elegbeleye is now chairman of the league board.
Dikko is expected to resume work immediately and drive a new vista of renewed hope for Nigerian Sports especially after a disastrous showing at the Paris Olympics.
In a related development, former Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare was also handed a way back into the Nigerian government after he was appointed as the Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Public Communication and Orientation.
