2022 Commonwealth silver medallist, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has set a new African record of 21.63m in the Shot Put at the 2024 Hvezdy v Nwhvizdech Indoor Tour Silver World Athletics in Czech Republic, www.aclsports.com reports.
The African Games champion beat the Paris 2024 Olympics qualifying mark and broke the 13-year-old African indoor record of 21.47m, which was set by Janus Roberts South Africa) in 2001.
He finished second in the event behind Tom Walsh (New Zealand) who reached a mark of 21.96m.
Enekwechi had previously told www.aclsports.com that he was pretty prepared for the World Indoor Tour and bigger throws are expected much later in the year but based on his full training. In his words, “I know I can throw around my personal best this upcoming season”.

Reacting to the new record, Enekwechi hopes to perform much better at subsequent indoor and outdoor Meets before the end of the year.
He revealed that it was a pleasure competing against some of the best athletes in the world.
The Olympian said, “Here in the Czech Republic, for the first time over 70 feet indoors. Olympics automatic qualifying toss and new National Record. I hope there is more distance where this came from. The crowd was electric and it’s always fun rubbing shoulders with some of the best in the world”.
Meanwhile, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi landed a 21.54m in the men’s Shot Put at the World Indoor Final in Madrid 2024 to finish fourth overall three days after setting his own African Record.
