Highly rated Nigerian teenager Akinkunmi Amoo has joined Danish top division outfit København from Swedish side Hammarby IF in a deal worth £4m (€4.4m), www.aclsports.com reports.
Amoo, 19, has dominated headlines for all the right reasons in the Swedish league ever since completing his move from Nigeria. He has now signed a 5-year deal with the serial UEFA competitions campaigners.
Amoo is primarily a winger but can cover several offensive positions. He recorded a return of 13 goals and nine assists in 48 appearances for Stockholm based club Hammarby.
FC København (Copenhagen FC in English) are currently placed second on the league log in Denmark, just two points behind table toppers FC Midtjylland with the league currently on winter break.
København’s Sporting Director Peter Christiansen described the former FIFA U17 World Cup starlet as one of the most interesting young players in Scandinavia (Norway, Denmark, Sweden).
“Amoo is one of the most interesting young players in Scandinavian football,” began Christiansen to the København website.
“He is a player with fantastic acceleration and great abilities in one-on-one situations and he is also quite dangerous. The potential is huge, but there is also a lot of hard work ahead of him. If we succeed in releasing this, he can achieve a lot.
“We already have a large number of talented players in our squad, and we have only brought Amoo in because we think he is extraordinary and can give our offensive set-up even more options.
“We want to build a very strong attack with many opportunities, and Amoo gives us an incredible boost and some additional qualities to those we already have,” said Christiansen.
Amoo was in Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets squad that participated at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Brazil in 2019, since when he has been at Hammarby. He thanks the Swedish side for the “fantastic time” he had there and looks forward to a good challenge in Denmark.
“I had a fantastic time at Hammarby, and I have great respect for the club and the fans there. They gave me the chance and believed in me and I will never forget that.
“I am also very happy that the clubs have made an agreement that both parties are happy with. Ever since I heard about the possibility of coming to F.C. Copenhagen I have hoped that it could be done.
“FCK is an international club with ambitions to compete against the biggest teams in Europe, and I was really attracted to be part of these ambitions.
“There have been other opportunities for me along the way, but I feel that FCK is the correct next step for me in terms of career. Here I can develop and learn a lot together with the fantastic players that the club already has.
“I’m really looking forward to the challenge and to stepping into Parken, which is a fantastic stadium with passionate fans,” said Amoo.
The predominantly left footed star could make his debut for København in their Atlantic Cup clash with Swedish side Halmstad on Saturday.
