Nigerian forward Bolaji Sakin put up a virtuoso display to inspire his Guinean side Horoya AC to a 2-0 win over Enyimba and thus eliminate the Nigerian champions from this season’s Total CAF Confederation Cup (TotalCAFCC).
Sakin and his teammates had gone into Sunday’s game at the back of a 1-1 draw against the Nigerians last Sunday in Aba and took full advantage of the tie with two goals; one in each half on Sunday.
It was Sakin, who played for Enyimba’s local rivals Abia Warriors while in the Nigerian league that scored the game’s curtain raiser in the 27th minute. His brilliant curler from the edge of the box beat goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai.
In truth, Enyimba had Afelokhai to thank for keeping them in the game with three excellent saves either side of half time as the scoreline remained 1-0 (2-1 on aggregate) to the home side going into the final quarter of the game.
Goalscorer for Horoya in the first leg Boniface Haba again came close to scoring in the 67th minute after he was put through by Sakin but his effort came off the cross bar.
There was no denying the Guineans a summariser six minutes from time when Boubacar Samassekou headed home Sylla’s corner kick to end Enyimba’s run in the competition.
The Guinean champions and league leaders will now face Egyptians Pyramids in the semi final while Enyimba will now focus on domestic football where they have a catalogue of outstanding games to prosecute.
