FCT athlete, Unique Umeh told www.aclsports.com that she underestimated her opponent in the final of the 47kg Taekwondo event.

Miracle Andrew (Plateau) defeated Unique Umeh (FCT) in the 47kg female final of the Taekwondo event at the just concluded 2023 National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta state.

The young athlete expressed disappointment in her inability to win a gold medal at the Games.

She said, “I feel good and I am grateful to God for winning a silver medal at the National Youth Games but I felt I should have done better in my final bout. I faced tougher opponents on my way to the final and I should have built on that.

“In my honest opinion, I know I did not give my best during my final against Miracle. I think I underestimated my opponent which cost me the gold medal”.

Umeh revealed that she fell in love with Taekwondo in 2017 when a practitioner used her father’s gym to practice.

She said, “It is a long story but I will try to be as brief as possible. Six years ago, a Taekwondo coach came to my daddy’s gym to book a training session and I was fortunate to watch it. Since then, I fell in love with Taekwondo and I have been practising since 2017.

“My coach has informed me that I will be participating in several local and national championships to increase my rankings as well as become a better fighter”.

Unique Umeh won one silver and one bronze in the Taekwondo event at the just concluded 7th National Youth Games.
