Chidindu Vitalis of Rivers state and Lucy Moses of FCT have emerged champions of the maiden National Skating Championship in the men and women’s category respectively.
The 1st National Skating Championship kicked off from the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja to the end of the service lane that led to the package B of the Moshood Abiola Stadium, near the Abuja City Gate on Saturday.
In the men’s category, Chidindu Vitalis of Rivers took first position, Gideon Omotayo of Oyo state took second and Oke Aremu from Delta state took third place while Lucy Moses and Rose Sanji from FCT took first and second place respectively while Rosemary David from Taraba state took third place in the women category.
National Silver medallist, Gideon Omotayo told www.aclsports.com that his dream is to skate at the Olympic Games.
He said, “I am confident that if there are more competitions in the country, I can become an African Champion and eventually represent Nigeria at the Olympic Games. Skating used to be recreation but now, it is serious business”.
Meanwhile, the President of Skating Federation of Nigeria (SFN), Abdullahi Maikano revealed that Nasarawa State has gotten the nod to host the 2024 National Skating championship after successful hosting of the maiden event in Abuja.
Maikano said a specific date and month would be announced soon when the championship would hold next year.
He said the federation was leaving no stone unturned to get sponsors to enable them organise more competitions for skaters.
“We are looking for sponsorship that will make us sustain the championship. “We are looking forward to participating in continental events, World Cup and Olympics,” he said.
Over 1,200 athletes from 20 states that participate in the championship.
