The Super Falcons of Nigeria defeated Cape Verde 5-0 in the second round of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers (WAFCONQ) played at the Moshood Abiola Stadium on Thursday evening.
A brace from Uchenna Kanu and Esther Okoronkwo gave the Super Falcons an emphatic win in front of the home fans in Abuja.
Diminuitive midfielder, Deborah Abiodun who came into limelight at the just concluded FIFAWWC in Australia and New Zealand alongside Osinachi Ohale who was a rock in the heart of the Falcons’ defence, were both reinstated into the team after missing out on the October Olympic Qualifying fixtures.
The girls stamped their authority early in the game as Uchenna Kanu scored from close range in the 7th minute. Cape Verde immediately tried to level the score but forced a brilliant save off the Super Falcons number 1, Chiamaka Nnadozie. Gift Monday extended the lead to put the Falcons in a more comfortable position.
From then on, the Falcons were in cruise mode as Kanu got her second and the third of the game with a well taken goal. The Super Falcons led 3-0 into halftime but continued from where they stopped in the second period.
Esther Okoronkwo who came on in the second period got the fourth of the game and her first on the evening in the 66th minute. She added another 10 mins later to complete her brace on the day as the Falcons edged their opponents by five goals to nothing in the second round of the WAFCONQ tournament.
