Edidiong Umoafia has set a new National Record in the men’s 67kg at the just concluded Champion of Champions National Weightlifting Championship in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.

Umoafia won three gold medals lifting 130kg in the Snatch event, 160kg in the Clean and Jerk as well as 290kg in the Total.

The Akwa Ibom weightlifter attributed his feat to constant training and guidance from his coaches

He said, “I am happy setting a new National Record in my weight class for the third time; I knew before the championship that I would set a new National Record because I trained hard. It would be sad if I had not won the three available medals on my home soil.

“After setting a new National Record, my targets are the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, the 2023 African Games in Ghana and Paris 2024 Olympics. I know the 2022 National Sports Festival title is mine but I am more focused on International Championships”.

“I have made the official list of weightlifters going for the Commonwealth Games and submitted myself to the Nigeria Anti-Doping Committee in order not to be found wanting”, he added.

Edidiong Umoafia won two gold and 1 silver at the 2018 National Sports Festival in Abuja and won three gold medals at the 2020 National Sports Festival in Edo state setting National Records in the two NSF.
